What it shows

Where the sea surface is flowing and how fast, from a day ago to three days ahead: the Gulf Stream, the Kuroshio, the Agulhas and the eddies they shed, with moving particles along the flow. Click or tap any sea point for the speed in km/h and knots. Useful to plan a crossing with or against the stream, to guess where something adrift will go, or to see where warm water is carried.

Where the data comes from

NOAA Global RTOFS (HYCOM ocean model at 1/12°, public domain), baked on our server once a day; surface speed averaged to a 0.5° grid and the flow direction to 1°, every 12 hours from 24 h ago to 72 h ahead; land is blank.

Reading the map

Dark blue for still water under 0.3 km/h, teal around 1 km/h, green at 1.6, yellow at 3, orange at 5 and red-magenta from 8 km/h, the speed of the strongest jets.

Units Surface current speed in km/h and knots (1 kn = 1.852 km/h).
